Five months ago, NASA's Curiosity rover landed on Mars with a mission to search for microbial life on the Red Planet and today it stands closer to the source. The rover has found its way to the deepest point of the Gale crater, known as the Yellowknife Bay, which has been found to be rich in various substances that are only evident in presence of water.

Project Scientists believe they have hit the jackpot and the drill site seems to reveal fractures and veins fills. The drilling has not yet begun but is expected to start this month at five different points, two inches into the bedrock to collect the powder for lab analysis. Curiosity's drill is the most intricate device on the rover and this would be NASA's first try at boring. Mechanical engineers on the team are taking great care to successfully get through what is described as the most difficult aspect of the surface mission.
