Charge Cellphone With Your Voice!

Sang-Woo Kim, from Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, has invented a device that can actually charge your cell phone with your voice. The technology is beneficial for those who really have a habit of talking for as long as hours on their cell phone. The technology uses the sound energy in order to produce electrical energy which can charge up your cell phone’s battery. A microphone converts the sound signal into electrical signals and transmits it to the amplifier or so, so does this new gadget. The good thing about it is that the gadget is not really a bulky one to make your stylish phone a fashion disaster and can be handled conveniently.

#-Link-Snipped-#The gadget uses calamine lotion and small strands of zinc oxide which together are sandwiched between a pair of electrodes. The arrangement is then fitted with a sound absorbing pad on top of it. Whenever the compressions and rarefactions of the sound waves hit the pad, the pad vibrates making the zinc oxide strands compress and relax. This produces an electrical pulse that can be very well made use of to charge your cell phone’s battery. This working can be correlated to piezoelectric effect which is exhibited by quartz.

Another thing is that the louder you speak, the more you generate. Experiments so far, showed that sound of a normal busy road, which is around 100(dB) can produce mild signals. This however, is not enough to charge a cell phone battery. However, with a proper combination of the materials used in the gadget, the output may be increased. Fascinating, isn’t it?

However, I could make out a few negative things about the new technology. Firstly, this would indirectly promote long talking and real noisy phone calls even from public places which can vex the people around. Have you ever noticed that the battery portion of your cell phone heats up while you charge it? It also becomes warm, by a long phone call. Now imagine doing both the things simultaneously. I think that this will heat up the battery faster than its heat dissipation rate and thus will increase its temperature. No doubt there will be some adverse effects of this on the battery like reduced life or swelling of battery or may be an explosion. All these effects are however not studied yet and nothing concrete about it can be said right now.
