Career in Device driver programming

Hi,
I am working as system admin in unix, solaris, network for 1.5 years and also have entry knowledge of veritas and sun volume manager and dont have much kernel level knowledge.
1. i want to learn c, c++ and go for device driver programming.can u all help me in knowing whether is it a good move since i love programming and have nice logic
2. is c, c++ depth knowledge essential
3. is embedded or assembly language prog needed
4. which books and courses should i go and refer.
5. What courses will help like device driver programming in solaris or Linux orr .......
6. any institutes offering good courses.i stay in mumbai,INDIA
