Can India Become Global Cloud Computing Hub?

Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer, in his recent business trip to India #-Link-Snipped-# that his company is looking at India as the global cloud computing hub.Microsoft's got more than 600 customers to its cloud computing service 'Azure' and gung-ho about it.

Those who are not aware of cloud computing (well, its high time that you start paying attention to cloud computing. Everything in future will be cloud based!) let me explain the concept in simple words. Imagine a large pool of computers, well connected to each other; but acting as a single computer for an outsider. That means, you will have thousands of processors, thousands of gigabytes  of memory & storage space which means hell lot of raw computing power. Now, on this hardware, install a software that makes everything looks like 'one'. Which means, you've virtualized the hardware. Over the top of this virtualized hardware, operating systems can be installed. Now the biggest advantage of this technology is that you can have on-demand computing power; memory and storage space! Scalability can be achieved without worrying about hardware and scaling up/down isn't a big deal.

Now, as you can tell; cloud computing means lot of computers working together round the clock. Which implies that there has to be supporting infrastructure to support the cloud. For, if cloud fails, there will be HUGE loss of data and money. If India has to become the global cloud computing hub; it will have to develop a supporting infrastructure, uninterrupted power supply and skilled engineers. Which I believe is going to take lot of time.

India still lags in most of the departments. Maintaining huge data-centers is not an easy task. Plus every data-center has a sub-data center that manages the backups and there's no point in talking about the power supply problem. Add to that the services based Indian IT Industry cannot easily produce the skilled engineers who can develop & work on the cloud technology in short term.

I personally think India is far from being Global Cloud Computing Hub. Maybe it can find its business in Cloud Computing Support services. What is your opinion?
