Camera That Sees Through Your Skin, And Round The Corners

Israeli scientists have come up with a camera that not only sees through solid objects like frosted glass and skin, but can also see around corners- and all this with just the natural light (as from the Sun or lamp), but not X-rays or lasers. Ori Katz, Eran Small, and Yaron Silberberg of the Weizmann Institute demonstrated that they can perfectly see an object behind obstacles or around corners, provided that the door stays open.

In both the above cases, the obstacle scatters the light to what looks like white light, but the camera can detect these very spots of noise and enhance them manifold to recreate an accurate image of the object. All this is possible with the use of a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). When light reflects off a surface, each point on that surface modifies the phase of light differently. SLM is just a series of pixels that alter the phase of light according to the current passing through them. The researchers have employed genetic optimization algorithm to adjust each and every pixel of SLM till an accurate and crisp image is created using the white noise. Scientists hope this camera proves out to be useful in medical imaging.
