BSNL Plans For 40,000 WiFi Hotspots - Digital India Initiative To Get A Boost
Public sector telecom major BSNL, announced that it is gearing up to set up 40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots at different locations in the country by March 2016 to counteract its incompetence in rendering 4G data services, the hotspots being faster than 4G services. During an announcement made at the meet organized by Madhya Pradesh telecom circle of BSNL, Mr. Anupam Shrivastava, CMD at BSNL said 500 Wi-Fi Hotspots have already been set up under the government's scheme. The company now plans to increase the number of hotspots to 2,500 in the current financial year and in upcoming 2-3 years up the number to 40,000.
A phase seven plan for west zone states has been planned which includes Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. Rs 1,000 crore will be spent on the work in these states. In MP, Rs 232 crore has already been spent on the work. On the occasion, Loksabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced launch of seven Wi-Fi hotspots in areas including Dodi Indore-Bhopal highway, Patlod village, Boat Club Bhopal, JP Hospital Bhopal, Fanda of Bhopal District, RGPV University and AIIMS Bhopal.
Initially, Wi-Fi facility would be free but after a time customers will have to pay. In an attempt to enhance its telecom service, the BSNL would be setting up about 25,000 mobile towers in the country, with an investment of Rs 5,500 crore.
Addressing the problem of call drops, the CMD was quoted as saying that the problem was faced not only by BSNL but by other telecom providers as well and had much to do with the people’s misunderstanding that the radiation emitted by the mobile towers has a detrimental impact on their health, due to which many such towers had to be evacuated from residential locations.
