Boeing’s 777X Airplane Has Got Foldable Wings
Airplane manufacturer Boeing has announced its new 777X series of twin-engine airplanes at the Dubai Airshow 2013. The 777 - 8X and 777 - 9X are twin aisle planes powered by GE9X engines from GE Aviation. Boeing says that these airplanes are twelve percent more fuel efficient than other airplanes in their category. To achieve this goal, the company had to fit longer wings which is said to improve fuel efficiency. Fitting longer wings meant that the plane would not have been able to fit at airport gates in smaller airports. To get around this problem, Boeing made the wingtips foldable. Once the wings are folded the wingspan reduces to by about twenty feet and the plane can be easily accommodated at any airport gate.
The 777X series boasts of improvements over the 777 series like larger windows and spacious cabins. Both these airplanes have been made for long distance flights as the 777-8X and 777-9X can cover distances of up to 17,220 km and 15,185 km while accommodating 350 and 400 passengers respectively. Airlines like Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Emirates have placed orders for a total of 259 planes at the launch event but you cannot expect to see these airplanes at your local airport anytime soon because Boeing wonât be delivering these planes before the year 2020.
