BBM Protected Service Now Available For Android And iOS Users

Blackberry announced the BBM Protected service during CES 2015. The service is aimed at providing additional security in instant messaging app BBM. The same service has now been made available for Android and iOS users as well. Considering vulnerabilities and threats from cyber-attacks, BBM Protected was earlier launched for enterprises to maintain the confidentiality. With this service, users would get enterprise grade encryption for BBM messages for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry users. Previously all the chat participants needed to be on BlackBerry and BBM Protected service to prevent information leaks.
BBM Protected adds an extra layer of security with all features of IM app. Messages being sent are encrypted using the keys generated by the communicating devices. #-Link-Snipped-# claims that this would prevent man-in-the-middle type of attacks providing greater security in competing encryptions schemes.
At an enterprise that have deployed BBM Protected, employee can start conversation with any other employee using BBM Protected within or outside the organization. The service then provides full end-to-end encryption and messages are encrypted using a PGP-like security model that involves three layers. Each message uses a unique and random symmetric key for message encryption. Next layer is the encryption using 168-bit triple-DES algorithm that encrypts the message at sender’s smartphone, authenticates it and decrypts at receiver smartphone. Third layer is TLS encryption preventing form eavesdropping or manipulation. Employees can use the BBM app to chat seamlessly with colleagues within the company and customers and partners outside the company.
BlackBerry claims that the service is easy to manage and deploy. BBM Protected service is managed by cloud-based Enterprise Identity by BlackBerry management console. There are no additional requirements for adapting this service and BBM Protected by be added quickly to existing IT policies.
