ASTRAEA Developing Advanced Technologies For UAVs

ASTRAEA, an ambitious program supported by the British Government is busy preparing for GenNex technologies in the field of Aeronautics- UAVs to be precise. Autonomous Systems Technology Related Airborne Evaluation & Assessment is a group which deals with advancement of technologies in Aeronautics and presently has two projects under its belt. One being the data transmission from a flying UAV to its operators on ground and the second one is sensing another flying object and avoid collision. The technology will be purely applied for domestic and commercial air planes.

Recently at #-Link-Snipped-# held on 7th of this month these advanced technologies were discussed. Whenever an UAV captures a time sensitive data, it should be send immediately to its operator at ground. Defense Company Cassidian which is handling the project plans to have multiple channels for such communication. Moreover they are also giving a good thought to the aspect of signal strength. The data transmission should not be severed completely. It should anyway continue even at less speed at times i.e.; just sending still images and when the signal gains strength should send the video at high resolution and high speed. The team had earlier tested this transmission system successfully and is now up grading it to a smaller size which runs on an 110KW power.

The 'Sense and avoid' system involves yet another futuristic technology. The air plane will change its course appropriately if it comes it the path of another flying object. Its first job is to keep away from the track of another air craft. The BAE systems' who are working on this project are quite optimistic to develop it and to have it in next generation of aviation industry. The conference was held at Royal Aeronautical Society, No.4 Hamilton Place, Mayfair, London. If both of these concepts are incorporated in industry, the number of air craft collisions can be reduced drastically.
