Artificial Intelligence For Traffic Control - University of Southampton Research

Traffic control can be quite a nuisance on bustling streets and can often hamper a better use of urban road capacity. University of Southampton researchers are looking for opportunities of implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in traffic-lights control. Their investigation, that involved using computer games and simulations for traffic control, proved that humans are more efficient at it than the computerized versions doing the same job. So, employing techniques in AI, they aim to to emulate the human approach in a new software. By doing this, they are trying to achieve a reduced overall environmental impact, improved road space utilisation and fuel efficiency, as well as reducing the time that people spend in commuting.

The researchers have been successful in developing a machine-learning computer that controls traffic just like a human would and learns new tricks of bettering the process through experience. This just means that we are looking ahead for smarter and greener ways of traffic - something that occupies a major time slot of everyone's day.
