    Answer should be: c)150

    As per the data,

    40/100 * (max. marks of paper 1) = 60

    Hence, Maximum Marks for Paper 1= 60 * (40/100) = 150

    questions like these can be easily done by back-substitution (by substituting the answers and seeing if it fits the question)

    Have a go at this - quite simple though:
    Two watermelons, A and B, are on sale. Watermelon A has a circumference of 6 inches; watermelon B , 5 inches. If the price of watermelon A is 1.5 times the price of watermelon B, which watermelon is a better buy?

    (Assume that the two watermelons are spheres).

    (A) A
    (B) B
    (C) Neither
    (D) Both
    (E) Impossible to determine

    hm again a simple one.
    suppose price of watermelon B is x.
    then the price of watermelon A is 1.5x.
    .
    Now the question is how to choose the best one among them.
    To do this you have to increase the circumference and price ratio.
    so the circumference and price ratio of watermelon A is 4/x and for B is 5/x.
    So it's better to go with B.

    mohit, but i have a different approach...

    Let radius of A = Ra
    and radius of B = Rb

    Ra/Rb = circumference of A/circumference of B = 6/5
    Therefore the ratio of volumes of A and B is 6^3/5^3

    Price of A/Price of B should be 6^3/5^3 if they are priced fairly
    Since actual Price of A/Price of B = 1.5 < 1.7 < 6^3/5^3 -> A is a better buy

    What do you think?

    without much calculatio and considerations, it must be the option B, but I dont know if we have to assume something! 😉
    I would love to see the correct answer!

    Nine people went to a hotel. 8 people paid 12rs each of them and the ninth paid 8rs more than the average of all the nine people. The total amount paid by them was?
    Ans: 117

    Can Anyone explain me how?I am not getting it.

    hmm
    Let suppose the amount paid by the ninth person be x.
    and the average of all the nine people be y.
    Then according to the question.

    Average (y)= (12*8) + x(amount paid by ninth person)/ 9.........(i)

    and also given,

    X= 8+y.........(ii).

    Solving (i) we get,

    9y - x = 96
    putting the value of (ii) we get,

    9y - (8+y) = 96,
    9y - 8 - y = 96,
    8y = 104,
    y=13,
    The total average of nine people is 13
    now put the value of y=13 in (ii) we get,

    x = 8+y
    x=8+13
    x=21
    So the amount paid by ninth person is x=21

    Now the total amount paid = (12*8) + 21
    = 96 + 21
    = 117.
    Am i right..

    quite obvious..

    Let the amount paid be 9th person be x.
    Then x = (( 96 + x)/9) + 8 {{average of all nine people + 8}}

    Solving the equation you get x= 21 (this is the amount paid by 9th person).

    Now add this with (12*8=96 --> amount paid by remaining 8).. 96+21=117
    Hope you got it..

    @ WIN
    Not so difficult.Lets do it.
    Assume the average is x
    Now, Total paid by 8 persons=96
    Amount paid by 9th person = 8+x

    Now, (96+8+x)/9=x --------------------------->{ as the avg is x }
    solving for x, -> x=13

    So total amount paid is 13*9=117
    Or
    Total = 96+8+13=117

    friends..
    if we COMPARE BY circumferences i.e in 1 rupee i wll get the more circumference of B.
    BUT if compare by volume the volume of A will be more in 1 rupees.
    so i dun know how to go bout it..
    plz help me out..

    @ freak16

    I think we should go by volume thing.
    We actually purchase watermelon according to the weight.
    We never purchase according to circumference.

    Say, density be d and assume same for both.
    Then,
    Ratio of Volume_A:Volume_B = 216/125
    Volume_A : Volume_B=1.7 (approx)
    =>
    Mass_A : Mass_B = 1.7 (density gets canceled out)
    Now,
    Price_A : Price_B = 1.5

    According to me, Watermelon A is a better buy.
    Correct me, if i am wrong.

    hi
    ans is simple...
    let us assume average of all the nine people is x.

    and average of 8 people is (12*8)/8 = 96
    hence
    x=(96+(x+8))/9
    x=(104+x)/9
    9x=104+x
    8x=104
    x=13

    now, ninth paid 8rs more than the average means (x+8)= 21

    total amt = 96+21
    =117
