  • Finally, the ecommerce in India is going to get a lot more interesting in 2012. With a sudden rush of eCommerce portals like Flipkart, Yebhi, LetsBuy and so on; the e-scene of India changed. Now, the global player Amazon is all set to enter Indian markets by setting up Amazon courier service in India. The AMAZON ASIAPACIFIC RESOURCES PRIVATE LIMITED, SINGAPORE has applied to the FIPB aka Foreign Investment Promotion Board of India to setup courier service in India - a very important backbone for any e-commerce player. It's important to note that setting up their own courier service played a very crucial role in the success of Flipkart.

Check out the entry #12 in the attached PDF taken from weekly update of #-Link-Snipped-#, that says the APAC wing of Amazon intends to setup courier service in India. Indian government allows 100% FDI in the courier service.

Amazon could have taken the partnership route - by joining hands with existing established service providers like DHL, FedEx, BlueDart or DTDC. But it seems that Amazon officials do not trust any existing courier service. It'd be important to follow how it turns out in Indian markets. Quite likely, Amazon will offer cash on delivery option along with other modes of payment and it needs to have a stronger goods delivery mechanism to ensure that they remain an important player in the Indian ecommerce in the longer run.

How do you think Flipkart & other eCommerce players should react?
