Acer TravelMate P648 Gets 802.11ad WiFi Before Others

Acer TravelMate P648 is world's first laptop to get super fast 802.11ad WiFi capability. The new laptop is being showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016. Aimed for the business class users, the TravelMate P648 promises super fast Internet connection speeds. Unlike every CES, Acer's decided to upgrade their existing machines over introducing a bunch of new ones. Here's an overview of the new wireless technology used in this machine -

The Acer TravelMate P648 boasts of the Atheros Chip, a tri-band processor from Qualcomm that uses 60 GHz radio in addition to the regular 2.4 and 5GHz. The new 802.11ad standard is being introduced to the market with 'WiGig' brand name. It allows multi-gigabit connection speed between the devices. Theoretically, WiGig tri-band devices are capable of delivering data at about 7 Gbps.

The 60 GHz signal is unable to penetrate walls, but capable of propagation through reflections from walls, ceiling and floor. The range of the signal is therefore limited. You may expect to use it when you are in the same room as the capable router, without any big obstacles in between.

The WiGig is meant to augment the existing networks and not replace them. Engadget notes that the typical use of the new standard would be in wireless displays as the 802.11ad can bring the casting lag down to 30 milliseconds from 802.11ac's 200 ms. The technology is likely to take its own time as electronics manufacturers around the world adopt this standard in their devices.
