3D Printing Consumer Electronics Now Possible - University of Warwick

If 3D printing technology fascinates you, here is a news that may make your eyes pop out. The folks over at University of Warwick in England have been able to embed sensors & other electronic parts within 3D objects in a single build process. This research team led by Simon Leigh used carbomorph, a low cost, conductive and piezoresistive material  to achieve this. Now printing object in a single go was a goal yet unachieved by anyone. So, the group set out to do it by completely printing a motion sensing glove. The Arduino Uno board was used to take piezoresistive measurements.

Along with that, for demonstration purposes - they got capacitive buttons printed for touch sensors and embedded two vertical capacitive sensor strips in a 3D printed mug to call it a “smart vessel”. Though one might wonder about the durability of these objects, it is undergoing tests. We expect wonderful applications out of this research work. You can check their research paper published at PLOS ONE #-Link-Snipped-#.
