With almost each and every person around the world having atleast one smartphone, if not more, as per YouTube, more than half of the videos watched on its site are on mobiles and other hand held devices. Having said so, the YouTube app isn’t (or wasn’t) as nearly as perfect as it should be and does have its fair share of glitches. But now, the YouTube app developers, after taking their own sweet time, have finally introduced the required changes in the UI of the app and as well as presented some new features to make it more appealing.

As per the new update, the app will now contain three tabs- Home, Subscriptions and Account. The Home tab is where you’d get your personalized playlist of videos and the videos that YouTube will recommend based on your viewing habits. The Subscriptions tab as pretty evident from the name, will list all the channels that you have subscribed to. And if you wish to be notified as soon as a new video is uploaded on your subscribed channel then all you need to do is tap on the bell icon present on home page of each channel. In the Accounts section, you can keep a track of the history of the videos that you have watched along with the videos that you have uploaded on the site.

Most YouTube app users are irritated by the fact that the videos in the vertical (portrait) mode do not actually occupy the complete screen even the ‘full screen’ option is selected. Thus the feature that would bring the most gratification is that now the vertical videos can be viewed in full screen mode same as that in horizontal (landscape) mode.

Naturally, with the increase in the number of app users, it is obvious that more and more people would want to upload the videos directly via their phones after shooting them. Although, the upload feature was available earlier, the revamped app provides better editing tools to post process the video before uploading it. The app now allows the users to snip the videos, add music and filter and then finally upload the video.

The update is available only for the website and Android OS currently. As per YouTube, the update for iOS will be available soon. Not only that, YouTube also said that these features are just the beginning. The users can expect many more such updates in this year.
