YouTube Offline Video Viewing Turned On For Hand-held Devices In India, Philippines & Indonesia
This capability has however being made available only in 3 countries throughout the world: India, Indonesia and Philippines. When asked the reason for this decision of isolation, YouTube Product Manager, Jay Kakkad said that over the period of time, Asian countries have repeatedly shown that they are the smartphone driven countries. The huge challenge that these countries however face is the high data rates and low data networks speeds. Allowing the user to overcome this challenge through the offline videos will help the users enjoy a steady, buffer-free content.
But there is a trade-off. It is not possible to download and keep these videos forever on the device. The users can only watch the videos for a short period of time. YouTube according to the Google Operating System blog said that the videos can be viewed up to 48 hours without an internet connection. For the purpose of monetization, the ads will also appear in the offline mode while viewing the video. Additionally, this feature is not available for all videos. Only the popular content on YouTube will have the offline feature enabled.
YouTube also has further plans to improve viewing experience. YouTube VP of Engineering, John Harding said in a press event that they will now bring the intelligent bit-rate streaming in mobile phones which will manage quality of content based on its speed and is expected to cut the buffering time into half as it did in the desktop version. Ajay Vidyasagar, regional director of YouTube in Asia-Pacific said that the intent behind the application of such features is to make India a better partner revenue for YouTube and to get it into the top three markets in the world.
