Who is Sir M. Visvesvaraya?
An engineer who worked relentlessly during the dawn of the 20th century in India to bring about engineering revolution. He is recognized internationally for his genius work in developing some of the biggest engineering projects in India. He has worked on the design and construction of several river dams, bridges and implementation of drinking water schemes & irrigation projects all over India.
In 1955, he has received the Bharat Ratna - Indian Republic's highest honour. In recognition of his numerous contributions to society, he was also knighted as a Commander of the British Indian Empire by King George V. He became the Dewan of Mysore State and is till date considered as "the architect" of the state of Karnataka's all-round development.
Some of his important projects works include -
- Being the chief designer of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad.
- Being the chief engineer for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysore.
- Design and construction of the K.R. Sagar dam
- Development of Brindavan Gardens
- Turn-around of the Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works
- Development of Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory
- Founding of the Bank of Mysore.
