Yahoo: From Search Engine To Answer Engine

Yahoo Inc is now planning to give a face-lift to its website jumping back into the internet search competition. To answer the queries of its users related to name, place animal or things like movies, weather forecast, etc, Yahoo Inc has completely revamped its Internet search.

[IMG]Yahoo with this upgrade is looking forward to get back its market share in Web search. The search options will appear as soon as the customer starts typing a word. A service on these lines is already provided by Google. But Yahoo’s technology is an upgraded version of the same. This up gradation is aimed at countering new features on Google Inc’s website and thus, aspiring to hold its original market share and get even bigger. Yahoo executive, Shashi Seth said in San Francisco while demonstrating the new service, "People are looking for answers; they're not looking for links." So finally someone seems to understand this. We have always been looking for answers. A site by the name #-Link-Snipped-# is also an answer engine (which gives direct answers to direct questions) but it faces the problem of limited data.

Search Direct being the name of the service displays answers to queries in a pop-up box. As the user continues typing in a search term these answers change in real time. Google on the other hand shows relevant search terms only after a few words are typed and then gives relevant results. Yahoo is also on a spree to provide graphically rich ad formats and video ads that could appear inside the Search Direct box. Seth senior vice president of Yahoo Search and Marketplaces, stated, "Over the course of the next couple of months you're probably going to see some of these ideas at play." Direct Search endeavors to provide direct answers to direct questions based on the content in Yahoo's archive of in-house and licensed content. There will be 15 categories such as sports, movies and weather, etc, to answer the queries. More categories will be added in the coming months. Search Direct has been started in the United States on Yahoo’s main page and will soon be visible on the other pages of Yahoo.com website.

The concept has always seemed wonderful but implementation is a problem. I’d anytime prefer an Answer Engine to a Search Engine for specific questions. I wish this turns out to be better than what the previous answer engines had to offer.

What will you choose?
