XQD 2.0 Specs Promise 1000 MB/s On PCI Express 3.0

Back in year 2010 SanDisk, Sony and Nikon join hands to develop a new kind of format for faster memory cards. The CompactFlash association saw an immediate advantage and adopted for further development. The association recently announced specs for XQD 2.0, promising data transfer speeds up to 8 Gb/s aka 1,000 MB/s. XQD 2.0 will need PCI Express 3.0 to deliver those speedier transfer rates; about 5 Gbps jump from XQD 1.0. Sony Corporation is sponsoring the development of XQD 2.0 and welcomes additional participation in the activity.

XQD 2.0 will utilize existing ports used by XQD 1.0 cards and connectors to deliver improved performance. Some of the highlights in the specs include professional form factor of 38.5mm x 29.6mm x 3.8mm, PCI Gen 1 and Gen 2 legacy support, Video Performance Guarantee (VPG) for newer profiles and 5mW standby power.
