Western Digital has began production of world's thinnest hybrid hard drive that are just 5mm thick. The new HHD takes off 2mm from the 7mm drives found in modern ultrabooks. The Hybrid Hard Drive combines the best of both solid state and regular HDDs. The ones being manufactured by Western Digital offer 500 GB of storage capacity. These HHDs offer instant on and rapid R/W speeds like SSDs and are quite robust. In addition the hybrid drives are 50% smaller than the current generation of hard-drives and cost 1/10th of the cost of the similar sized SSDs. Acer is already partnering with WD to include these new drives in their upcoming gadgets.

The Hybrid Hard Drives technology incorporates MLC NAND flash storage coupled with traditional magnetic storage. Thus the hybrid drive can offer high-capacity storage along with enhanced R/W speeds & other advantages of the solid state drives. Expect the future ultrabooks to be wafer-thin and pocket-friendly.
