World’s Largest Timepiece By Jim Bowers At Burning Man Festival
Burning man festival held in Black Rock Desert, Nevada every year brings the best of art, technology and gadgets together. With this yearâs theme being âRites of Passageâ artist Jim Bowers has decided to create what will be the worldâs biggest timepiece as per the Guinness book of world records. The arts and tech enthusiast told that heâs been planning for this âburning timeâ project for the past three years and now finally has the chance to implement it. Thereâs not a shred of doubt that Jimâs going to showcase a masterpiece as heâs been doing on for the past 14 years at the Burning Man festival. In last yearâs edition he put on display a 40-foot carbon wire frame with giant animated eyes which he named the âEyes of Gawdâ. The visitors at this yearâs burning man will see the whole festival arena being in the form of a laser driven 1 mile wide clock.

Bowers has collaborated with a few experts to create this awesome combination of art and technology that will enthrall the audience for the 8 days. The festival is already fully booked and will be inaugurated on 29th August. You will be surprised by the sheer size of this giant of a clock. It will be having a diameter of nearly one mile, circumference reaching 3.25 miles with second, hour and minute hands hanging above on centrally located tower. The hands will hang some 40 odd feet above the visitorsâ heads. The entire inner playa area of the festival ground will be occupied by the clock in the Black Rock City, Nev. Beyond this area, there will be twelve 22 feet towers standing in a perfect circle indicating the hours of the clockâs face. The 1Mile Clock is supposed to be a highly accurate thing and is correct up to 2000th fraction of a second!
Bowers, who lives in Sacramento, has selected 67 skilled experts to help him in this project. The clockâs centerpiece design and programming of its powerful laser will be supervised by a team of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory researchers including Marc Hertlein, Russell Wilcox and Tim Black. Besides this many other artists will be contributing to build this massive structure.
