Project Abstract / Summary : WIRELESS TRANSMISSION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY

    WRITEUP:-
MODEL: - we will be working on the principal of microwaves for wireless power transmission.

We will be using two renewable energy sources (solar power and wind power); the energy generated with these sources will be stored in a 12V DC battery. This will also result in charging of the battery. Once the battery will be charged, we will connect through the inverter circuit which will step up the voltage to 220-230V AC. From the end of the transformer a voltage doubler circuit will be connected. This circuit will solve two functions for us-

    1. It will convert the AC power to DC power.

    2. It will also step up the required voltage level to which is required by the magnetron.

At the end point of the voltage doubler circuit a magnetron will be connected which will produce the required wave. After this an isolator and wave guide of suitable frequencies will be connected. At the end of the wave guide the transmitter IC BQ500414Q of Texas instrument will be connected for transmission of wave. On another circuit IC BQ51020 receiver IC will be connected for receiving the required power. Our main aim will be to transmit some amount of power, improve the efficiency and to reduce the losses.

We will also be trying to add up the system of load management i.e. - we will be trying to manage the load smartly and efficiently so that efficient system could be created and implemented effectively for the system. This system will be a cost effective system that could be used commercially.

MICROWAVE TRANSMITTER FOR WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION:-

This transmitter will generate the required input signal to be transmitted at a particular frequency. The power of this device would be varied as to vary the power received and the distances between the transmitter and the receiver. This assembly will have different parts coupled together to deliver variable output. The various parts of the generator are listed below:

    MAGNETRON:-

A magnetron is a high power microwave oscillator in which the potential energy of an electron cloud near the cathode is converted into R.F. energy in a series of cavity resonators.

    CIRCULATORS AND ISOLATORS:-

The isolator is often used to couple a microwave signal source (oscillator) to the external load. It allows the available power to be delivered to the load but prevents the reflection from the load transmitted back to the source.

    DIRECTIONAL COUPLER/POWER METER:-

A directional coupler is defined as a device used to couple power from the waveguide system (at a reduced value) to facilitate equipment interface for frequency, power, or other system measurements. Directional couplers are most commonly used to measure forward and/or reflected energy.

DC MICRWAVE RECIEVER FOR WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION:-

This receiver is different from wireless communication. It consists of demodulator and a rectifier to obtain the required dc output value. For this a Rectenna will be used.

    RECTENNA:-

Rectenna is a device that is used for beamed microwave power reception. It combines the function of the antenna and rectifier. A unique characteristic of rectenna is the dependence of its RF-to-DC conversion efficiency on its RF input power and on its connected load. RF-to-DC conversion efficiency is defined as the ratio of DC output supplied to the load and its RF input power to the effective aperture area of the antenna. If an ideal diode is used, the RF-DC conversion efficiency does not depend on the RF input power. However, the RF-DC conversion efficiency does depend on RF input power in case of realistic diodes.

    Application:-

Ø Recently the National aeronautical space administration (NASA) and Japan have been working on the project in which they are going to transmit the energy produced by solar panel, mounted on a satellite to Earth. They have the technology to transmit the energy to several thousand kilometers. In the same way we can produce energy from renewable energy sources and transmit it to the remote areas where still the electrical energy is not available.

Ø This system can even be used commercially for powering the metros and even trains which need electricity to run, a receiver can be connected on train and on the pole a device can be mounted which will produce the microwave beam.

Ø This system can be used for wireless charging of mobiles.

Ø This can even be used for electric cars and bus for charging of battery and even for direct supplying of power.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : In present scenario, our electricity demand is increasing day by day and production of electricity is not that much to cope up with present demands. Therefor some other means should also be searched. This is a particular way to wirelessly transmit the electrical energy produced. This can help in reducing the overall losses, electricity thefts. As our honorable prime minister Mr.Narendra Modi plans to built the smart cities across India this could be the proper means to transmit electricity wirelessly in smart cities. We picked the project topic as this is still fresh and can be implemented at various places.
