Microsoft is trying to make Windows 10 the perfect operating system for every user around the globe. As Microsoft’s Windows OS is a globally availabke product, it should support all languages. However, the current scenario lacks in delivering them. To overcome this shortcoming, Microsoft is going to introduce an Universal Shaping Engine in Windows 10 that will increase the language support and millions of users around the globe will be benefitted. Let’s see how Redmond’s software giant is going to achieve this goal.

A shaping engine in the OS enables scripts with contextual and non linear typographic requirements to be displayed on the computer screen. Currently, there is no shaping engine, due to which half of the languages are not supported by the current version of Windows. People have found another way to tackle this kind of problem by installing various fonts and using different keyboards. But the script thing is still not looking right due to lack of shaping engine.

For Windows 10, Microsoft has developed a ‘Universal Shaping Engine’ which supports any complex script provided with a suitable font. There are 4 things that make this shaping engine universal,

It consumes data directly from the Unicode Standards.
It makes use of ‘Universal scripting model that models the superset of human writing systems.
Opentype font feature enables the support for cutting edge typography.
    And the publicly available specifications.

Due to the new shaping engine, Microsoft Windows 10 now supports many languages like Balinese, Batak, Brahmi, Buginese, Buhid, Chakma, Cham, Duployan, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Grantha, Hanunoo, Javanese, Kaithi, Kayah Li, Kharoshthi, Khojki, Khudawadi, Lepcha, Limbu, Mahajani, Mandaic, Manichaean, Meitei Mayek, Modi, Mongolian, N’Ko, Pahawh Hmong, Phags-pa, Psalter Pahlavi, Rejang, Saurashtra, Sharada, Siddham, Sinhala, Sundanese, Syloti Nagri, Tagalog, Tagbanwa, Tai Le, Tai Tham, Tai Viet, Takri, Tibetan, Tifinagh, and Tirhuta. Some of these were supported on previous version but with different technology.
