  • The WikiLeaks server that hosted the site during the release of classified US State Department docs, is now available on eBay for $25,200. The server belongs to Swedish Internet service provider Bahnhof, and the same was rented to Wiki in 2010, using which WikiLeaks flushed out the ‘Collateral Murder’ video's 2007 footage that showed a US helicopter crew gunning down a few Baghdad activists, including two Reuters journalists. It also disclosed the Guantanamo Files and CNN reports, among others.

Bahnhof CEO Jon Karlung stated that all the revenue garnered from this sale shall be donated to organizations supporting the widening of transparency, like Reporters Without Borders and the 5th of July Foundation. He added that the server symbolizes "freedom of internet" and shall be remembered forever.

If at all you're considering to participate in the sale, a fair warning that all the data in the 35 pound hardware has been erased via 'Gunmann Data Snitation Method', which makes sure that no data is recovered by overwriting the hard drive 35 times. Karlung hopes to raise 50,000 dollars by the end of the bidding this week. The server is in pristine condition, and has stood tall over the multiple hack attacks which've tried to cripple the hardware.

Karlung further added that keeping the NSA scandal in mind, the server should not go to any security agency but to an organization that values freedom of speech and celebrates the price of one's own opinion.

It's really sad what happened to Wikileaks. Whatever be the reason, they were the symbol of "internet freedom", may be someday some other Julian Assange will fight again!

Wikileaks stopped renting the server from Bahnhof in 2011, and while it was in operation, the Bahnhof employees nicknamed the server 'Wily Wonka'. If parallels be drawn, while Julian Assange was taken to be the visionary Wily Wonka, WikiLeaks was considered to be his mysterious chocolate factory. 😀

Let's not go too far astray glorifying WikiLeaks.

It would be one thing if there were a shortage of evil, motivated and capable monsters, but there isn't. Twelve years ago tomorrow we got a look at that evil. I hope no one here really celebrates releasing information that could help the sons of Satan murder more innocent people.
