Why do we normalise vectors or frequency?

Why do we go for normalization like normalized vectors or normaluzed frequency etc.why cant we just use the original ones?

what i know is if we have so many values then we take generally normalized value. say suppose if we have a non -sinusoidal signal & signal to noise ratio has to be calculated then ratio of normalised signal power to normalized noise power is taken . because values r different .
in case of sinusoidal signal normalised power is calculated as V(rms)/R .here R=1 is taken into account.
