Why bridge piers are not triangular ?

Sir,practically i have seen bridge piers of different shapes -- SQUARE , OCTAGONAL , RECT. , CIRCULAR ETC.
WHY IS THERE NOT A TRIANGULAR PIER ( I MEAN IT'S A STABLE STRUCTURE OF 3 SIDES ( MIN.) , AND ALSO WHY ARE THERE NOT TRIANGULAR TIES ?
THANKS A LOT ......!!
