Turns out that the ad-spammers are now turning to WhatsApp as it replaces the default SMS. There are several players in this new game that offer bulk messaging via SMS at the rate of 25 paisa per message for a bulk purchase of about 1 lakh messages. The pricing goes down to 23 paisa and 21 paisa for quantities of 2 and 5 lakh bulk purchase. I'm wondering if there can be any method to prevent this!
The ad spammers can even spam you with advertising messages comprising of images, videos and also audio notes. The pricing for images begins at 30p / forward (because forwarding involves data charges). If whatsapp doesn't do anything immediately to control this, I can clearly see that whatsapp will be turned into a spam powerhouse that will be extremely difficult to control.
