What's the maximum speed achievable for a spaceship?

Curious to know what's the maximum achievable speed for a spaceship? It takes months for the satellites and rovers to reach out to distant planets viz. Mars - and I was wondering if there's a limit to which these satellites can be accelerated to. That'd mean we need some knowledge of what are the factors that govern the speed of satellites in space.

Would really appreciate responses.

Add to this, how does something burn/accelerate in vacuum (space)? Deciphering the Vacuum and it's properties would throw some light. Any space-tech-specialists here?

We're writing to ISRO folks to participate here. I hope someone will join in. If you know anyone in ISRO, NASA, or any space agencies who can answer such queries, please invite them here.

It all depends on your energy source, Energy efficiency. Also a limit to which man can perceive and control speed. Man cannot control things at speed of light, so that won't be a question of working at the speed of light, but a decent speed can be achieved and they are already researching more on that daily. Its just that we are developing the technology which will eventually help us.
