In a blog post, Google's engineer Carrie Grimes mentioned that the Google's latest upgrade to its search engine program is ready. Google calls it 'Caffeine'. In order to understand the difference between the Google Caffeine and Google's old program, it is very important to understand how Google search engine works. Those who have a background in computer engineering may skip this video but its a must-watch for those who always wanted to know how Google search engine works. So, as you understood, when you search on Google, you are *NOT* searching the web. Instead, you are searching the information that Google Inc. USA has about the Internet. The model that Google followed earlier had several layers of indices which were refreshed at regular intervals. Some of them were refreshed faster (most the websites that had higher PR of about 8-10) and others were refreshed at a slower rate (up to 2 weeks). Which content to display on the front page of Google was determined by Page Rank mechanism. #-Link-Snipped-# But the web has evolved a lot over the time. Content is not generated by handful people behind popular websites. Today, everyone has power to generate and add content to the Internet via blogs, tweets, status updates, forums etc. With this evolution, enormous fresh content gets added to the Internet every second. Google thinks that the fresh content should get priority over the old content. That means, more importance will now be given to tweets, real time updates, forum posts (hopefully 😉 ) and blogs. With Caffeine, Google plans to analyze the Internet in parts and 50% priority will be given to fresh content. Google says that with Caffeine, the searches will be faster and more 'real time'. Those websites that relied on old content will get lesser priority in crawling. As the search engine begins to roll out the new version; search engine rankings of the websites are bound to be affected. It would be interesting to see how Caffeine works.
