what is the exact defination of PINCH OFF voltage in JFET?

what is the the exact defination of "pinch off voltage " in JFET..
is it function of VDS or VGS?
some books says that at pinch off state ID is zero....
if it is a function of VDS then why the VP are taken as negative ...
in data sheet VGS(off) are called pinch off voltage ...
plz explain which one is correct......
