Not all UNIX machines are 100% secure. 😉 But for a home users; uBuntu or any similar flavour should do the job.

For a typical home user with Windows 8 running; follow these simple Rules:
    • Always use strong passwords
    • Do not use pen-drives, hard-disks borrowed from your friends
    • Do not visit websites that aren't popular or trusted
    • Do not download stuff from Torrent websites
    • Do not open attachments from people; unless you know what they contain

    To add to this list,
    • Use an good anti-virus, Pay for it even
    • Use Ad Blockers on your browsers
    • Stop using IE, start with Chrome/Firefox
    • Look at the amount of programs that load on your start-up theres always something lurking there which you might want to remove (use msconfig tool)

    Also,
*Do not install any program that you are not aware of or you don't trust.
*If you have modem/router at your place, use WPA or WPA-PSK network authentication for WiFi rather than keeping it shared or WEP.
*If possible, you can add MAC addresses of devices you use on your router. This will restrict unknown devices.
*Share your e-mail id ONLY with people you trust.
*Try logging into your accounts only from your devices rather than friends' or any other devices.

Well typically, you're the only one who provide access to an intruder. Yeah, accept it 😀
Adding more to the list, I know it's near to impossible to download from trusted sites every time, so what you can do is, whenever you download anything from a suspicious site, check it via virustotal.com It would scan the file for you with 46 antivirus and the best part is their signatures are kept updated.
That would be sufficient I guess. Plus, no one can guarantee of being secure.
