WD 4 TB Hybrid Hard Drive Prototype Demo At Storage Visions 2015

Western Digital Corporation popularly known as WD has announced that it will showcase its new 4 TB hybrid hard drive at Storage Visions 2015 that will be held from January 4 to 5 in Las Vegas. The company claims that this hard drive will be the world’s fastest 4 TB hybrid drive. In a press release WD mentioned that the prototype of the ultra-fast drive features the SATA Express PCI-e interface, a 4 TB 3.5-inch hybrid hard drive form factor, and up to 128 GB solid state drive (SSD). The main objective of designing such a hybrid drive is to provide seamless performance to the users and improve GB-per-dollar factor for applications such as desktop and gaming.

WD will demonstrate two WD SATA Express interfaces at Storage Visions 2015 as it is expected to be the next generation of storage technology. These demonstrations will include motherboards from WD partners ASRock and Gigabyte. The cabled SATA Express PCI-e allows an interconnection flexibility and configuration alternatives for single-volume caching and RAID.

The cache size of 64 GB in SATA Express 4TB drive will provide smooth and continuous performance to the users who have heavy storage requirement. WD has also claimed that this new super-fast hard drive has achieved the PCMark8 benchmark score of 4459 in the company’s labs. From the below graph, we can see that this benchmark is not only close to SSD in terms of PCMark8 storage score but also demonstrates better GB-per-dollar value. However, why the company is comparing a 4 TB hybrid drive with 256 GB SSD is not clear.

Gary Meister, senior vice president of engineering of WD, said that the optimization of the overall PC subsystem to a single storage bus on the basis of PCIe protocol is taking place in order to provide an advanced storage solution. Therefore, the company has tried to place a hard drive, flash NAND and SATAe technology into one package that will free one slot in the system.
