At Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen showcased their all electric E-Bugster concept which more or less looks like the Beetle with some muscles and some design tweaks. With a reduced roofline of three inches and large 20-inch wheels, the E-Bugster is a definite eye catcher.

Volkswagen used its Blue-e-motion electric drive unit in this concept before its scheduled production debut in VW's Golf. The vehicle is powered by a 695 pound Li-on battery which is placed just below the rear seat. The battery combined with the electric motor gives a driving range of 100 miles before it runs out of power and the car even has options of accepting all types of charging including the quick charge which charges the battery up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes. The electric motor pumps 114 horsepower with 199 pound of torque. The E-Bugster can be compared to Nissan Leaf which drives 73 miles compared to its 100 miles but Leaf is a five seated car where as the E-Bugster can take in only two passengers.

Some of the design tweaks includes a redesigned front and rear faces which are fitted with LED lights which have been used by Volkswagen in most of its electric vehicles. The interior has not been changed much from the gasoline version of the Beetle besides adding a display which reflects the consumption of energy.

There hasn't been any official announcement about the production of the car but the five seater electric Golf, carrying the same drive unit as the E-Bugster, is supposed to be available from 2014 with a drive range of 93 miles.
