Virgin Mobile to be the First iPhone Only Carrier, Offers Year of Service for $1

Following a deal with Apple Inc, Virgin Mobiles USA, a subsidiary of Sprint would now be an i-phone exclusive carrier. For customers, this translates into considerable pluses as anyone who buys an iPhone from Virgin Mobile by July 31 would get 12 months of unlimited talk, text, and data for $1. They could also join the new Virgin Mobile Inner Circle club and buy a round-trip ticket to the U.K. on Virgin Atlantic as well as take 20 percent off flights on Virgin America.

The offer also comprises of third night free when staying at Virgin Hotels, and discounts on Virgin Wines and the Virgin Sport San Francisco Festival of Fitness in October and other such discounts for people who sign up by Sept. 30. The customers who get hold of the new iPhone from Virgin after July 31 stand to avail six months of service for $1, an offer that Virgin Mobile CEO Dow Draper indicated will be permanent.

Virgin Mobile USA will first be offered in Apple's stores then online. One needs to purchase an iPhone from Apple or Virgin and port the phone number over to Virgin’s Inner Circle plan. On offer also are some optional add-ons for international calls, packed into a $5 or $10 bundle, depending on one’s priorities. These include unlimited calls to select countries or landlines, unlimited texts, and other reduced rates.

The new deal on Virgin’s part, seems to be component of a broader strategy of revamp aimed to go upmarket in line with its numerous other businesses. It effectively makes Virgin Mobile, the newest carrier to sell its service in Apple’s stores, and the first iPhone-only carrier in the U.S.
