Violators Beware! e-Challans In Delhi From September This Year
The pettiest of traffic norms violations will not be spared, or so we believe, with the announcement of e-Challan system from September. The system will be active in the Indian capital assisting the Traffic Police.
The e-challan system was to be installed previously in April 2009, but things didnât turn out #-Link-Snipped-#well. If everything goes according to the plans, system should likely be active from this September. Regular traffic violators are in for a rude shock, once this system is in place. Traffic rules are all set to be stricter and meaner, and apart from major offenses, even minor offenses like riding a bicycle with defective brakes will be punished, reported the Traffic officials.
A senior traffic police official said âAs soon as a vehicleâs registration number is entered in the device, it will automatically scan the server and ascertain if the vehicle is stolen, wanted in any criminal case or is on the suspicious vehicles list.â
The traffic police have already called upon many people to submit their expressions of interest, mostly from those who have already devised such objects for their practical applications and regular utilities. A demonstration spanning one month will be practiced across Delhi, based on which, the Traffic Department will prepare the requisite clauses and call for tenders.
Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of police (Traffic Dept.), said âWe hope that we will be able to introduce the long pending e-challan system in the national capital within three months,â He also added that the department will purchase 1,500 to 2,000 e-enforcement machines.
An e-challan is just an electronic version of the already existing and in-use manual challan book. This e-challan would be issued through a device called the PDA or Palmtop Digital Assistance. It is a hand-held GPRS enabled device that will prosecute the traffic violators online. A senior traffic police officer said, âSince it will be a computerized system and be connected to the central database, the prosecution history of a violator will be at our finger-tip. Besides, details of violation once stored in the device cannot be changed or tempered or deleted unlike the existing manual challan system.â
After completion of their training, the device will be issued to every traffic head constable, assistant sub-inspector, sub-inspector and inspector.
