Veteran Hacker Jeff Moss Appointed As ICANN’s New Security Chief

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) appointed a security expert to safeguard the web. For those of you who do not know about ICANN, it is the agency in charge of security of the world’s Internet addresses. The agency hired the experienced and self proclaimed hacker Jeff Moss on Thursday to counter the threat that the Internet faces from the hackers all around the world.

#-Link-Snipped-#Moss is more popularly known in the hacker community by his code name Dark Tangent is the founder of the Black Hat computer security conferences. The ill famed annual DefCon hacker meeting that takes place in Las Vegas is also one of his brainchild. He will start his stint as the vice president and chief security officer of the ICANN this Friday at the Washington D.C. office.

"I can think of no one with a greater understanding of the security threats facing Internet users and how best to defend against them than Jeff Moss," said ICANN chief executive Rod Beckstrom.

Beckstrom believes that Moss being a hacker himself, has a sound understanding and in depth knowledge about this field. Moss has been expoiting the loopholes in the cyber security systems for the last two decades. If you feel like looking at an applicant’s resume before giving him a job, then you must take a look at Jeff’s awesome CV that boasts of work experience at Secure Computing Corporation and in the security division of professional services firm Ernst & Young. In addition, he is also an active member of US Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council. When interviewed, Jeff Moss appeared excited about this new opportunity to again prove his mettle. ICANN has the responsibility of safeguarding the IP addresses. According to Moss, ICANN must detect any threats to the Domain Name System (DNS) and handle these threats prudently as it holds the key to the security of about 2 billion internet users around the globe. The domain name system is the place where registration of all the internet addresses in the world is done. The DNS plays a key role in interconnecting computers which are remotely located to communicate with each other.

Beckstrom accompanied Moss at the Black Hat meet at Las Vegas in 2010 to declare a major upgrade to the Internet that guaranteed to restrict cyber thugs from using fraudulent websites that mislead users into downloading viruses or disclosing vital personal information.

ICANN formed a coalition with online security experts VeriSign and the US Department of Commerce to provide websites encoded identification to confirm their authenticity and legitimacy. A secret ciphered identification codeword is attached by the Domain Name System Security Extensions (with an acronym DNSSEC).

The dangers faced today by the Domain Name System are more or less like the background of a digital cold war where attacks anywhere at any time can occur. In such a situation, having a valuable aide and asset like Jeff Moss will definitely prove an advantage to ICANN.
