vertical spindles

Iam a student doing my project at an industry
we have a vertical spindle with a spur gear at the top end meshing with an internal gear, I just wanted to know that while designing do we need to consider both torsion and bending or only torsion because the spindle is vertical and the axis of the gear is also vertical??

is there any practical example of a shaft subjected to pure torsion?
