  • As promised, the 300 Steam Machines Prototype that Valve will be sending to its 300 superlucky eligible users later this year, is finally all set to get shipped alongwith Steam Controllers to their respective home destination. As per latest announcement by Valve, the Steam Machine Prototype; specifically built for your living room's media center is a high-end, high performance box built out-off-shell PC parts which means Steam Machine is fully upgradable, allowing it's users to swap hardware components like GPU, CPU & even entire Motherboard, if they wish to. Valve will be disclosing the source CAD files to public of the enclosure of Steam Machine, in case if people want to build similar machine by purchasing hardware & assembling it. It will be no surprise if you see few new companies emerging in the market selling super-cool Steam Machine enclosures.

    The Hardware specification of Valve's 300 Steam Machine Prototypes :

    GPU : some GTX780s, some GTX 760s, some GTX 660s & if you're really lucky then 60,000 INR ($1000) monster card GTX Titan.
    CPU : some with i7-4770s , some i5-4570s & some with i3s.
    RAM : 16 GB DDR3 - 1600 MHz for CPU & 3 GB GDDR5 for GPU.
    Storage : 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
    Power Supply : Internal 450w 80plus Gold
    Approximate Dimensions : 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 high (dimension unit not mentioned, but I assume it will be inches)

    Overall, the hardware configuration is very impressive, Intel Haswell CPUs with Nvidia GPUs are perfect match for gaming in Linux based distribution, as Haswell processors are performing exceptionally good on Linux by delivering awesome performance-per-watt & along-with Nvidia binary drivers it will deliver best performance to the gamers.
    Once the final design of the Steam Box prototype is ready, Valve will be posting it's images before shipping Steam Machines to their 300 lucky users ,just to let know how the Steam Machine gonna look like. Valve ended entire announcement with the promise of 'closer looks' at the Steam Controller.
