Unmanned Patrolling Boat

Project Abstract / Summary : Our project is about the Unmanned, self-guided, automated, small and compact surveillance boat capable of doing surveillance autonomously for coastal area. It is named as Unmanned Patrolling Boat (UPB). The main aspect of innovating UPB is to detect the threat coming from sea water and take necessary actions to control it, before it comes into our city. The major function of UPB is to offer surveillance in specifically programmed area and collecting the programmed parameters on boat or above or below the sea water such as temperature, motion detection, live images, distance measurement and sending these all parameters to controller so as to take necessary actions as boat is unmanned. The UPB has features like 180 degree rotational camera for tracking with image processing, Radar, motion detection system, temperature detection system, cooling control system, driving system and security system.
Working:
The UPB will offer surveillance over specific coastal area driven by driving system which is programmed. The eagle eye i.e. camera and Radar are mounted on servo motor for rotating and tracking area in rotational way at each angle. As soon as any object comes in front of camera, it will capture that image and by image processing it will generate the tracking box on every moving object in live image. So that controller gets an information about floating object as shown in fig(a). And the Radar will calculate the distance between boats and object as shown in GUI of Radar in fig(b). Motion detection sensor senses the motion by detecting the heat signal (Infrared Radiations) so that controller gets information from which side the suspicious activity is coming. The working of it as shown in fig(c). Live image video is continuously shown to the controller by camera on screen in control room. The temperature in engine chamber is updated and send to the controller continuously. Because when boat is moving on sea water, there is the pressure created by the sea waves on the propellers of boat. So the propellers require more power to drive the boat and they extract more power from the batteries. And hence there may be the chances of short circuit due to excessive heating of batteries. So to avoid such mishaps, as soon as temperature rises above the certain standard temperature in engine chamber, the cooling control system gets activated automatically to maintain the temperature level. There may be a case such that any intruder trying to enter into boat, as soon as he touch the boat the touch plate security warning alarm gets activated and controller gets information about this so as to take necessary actions against this suspicious threat.Touch plate circuit is shown in fig(d). It is also equipped with weapon but the control of weapon is authorised only by the controller in control room and used it in critical situations only.

Hardware and software used?

1) Interfacing of all modules as shown in fig(e)
2) Drive system:- Two DC motor of 12V, 300 rpm, motor driver IC L293D for converting the voltage
3) Sensors:- i) LM35 temp sensor:- Use in cooling control system,Operate at -55 to 150 C
ii) PIR (Piroelectric Infrared Ray) Sensor:- For motion detection sensing of any human or object, Require 3 to 5V, Range upto 20 feet, Detection Range is 110 to70 degree
4) Radar (Ultrasonic Sensor HC SR04):- Use for distance measurement, Ranging accuracy upto 3mm and range is 2cm to 400cm
- Test Distance=(High level time* Velocity of Sound)/2;
Where high level time is the time interval between sending triggering signal and receiving the echo signal
5) Cooling Control System:- Exhaust fan and temp sensor LM-35

6) Security system:- 555 timer IC, 12 V DC relay, Astable circuit covering all the portion of boat.
7) Software used:- Embedded C, Processing language, MATLAB for image processing.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : When we talk about India, India has made tremendous progress in defense Research & Development. India has a coastal area of about 7,516.6 Km. It is not possible to any country in the world to offer 24/7 surveillance over such massive coastal line. The attack of 26/11 on Mumbai and recent incidence of Mahashivratri dated on 6th March such that 10 terrorist came into Gujarat from sea coast had planned to attack on temples on behalf of Mahashivratri. These two incidences are enough to prove that we are lacking in offering surveillance over coast line. If such technology were present at the time of 26/11 Mumbai attack, we could have save lots of lives and lots of children from being orphan. So to reduce such incidences and for increasing the coastal security using advanced technologies, we have choose this topic.

Importance of Unmanned Patrolling Boat:-
- To increase the coastal security with high accuracy
- Regulating the traffic over sea lanes
- Compact and small in size, so operating cost is low
- Saving human lives from threat as it is unmanned
- Guidance for fisherman and Use on international boundaries also to offer guidance for fisherman who don’t know about national boundaries
- Useful in dams so as to make watch over illegal fishing and excavations

*Future Scope:-

1) The surveillance boat requires only two features so as to offer surveillance accurately one is driving system and other is camera i.e. tracking system.
2) Camera:- should be long range based on short wavelength infrared technology equipped with image processing, heat detection, motion detection, distance measurement function, having the penetrating capability so as to view into the suspicious boat and should be capable of taking very contrast image in mist, fog and heat haze condition. For e.g. Red-Kite Camera developed by Airbase Defense and Space’s Optronics Business Unit.
3) Driving system:- will be having batteries of new emerging technology such as Lithium Ion battery, which can handle large amount of current as it has high energy density and can be charged faster. It can offer power 3 times more than the traditional batteries.
4) Solar panel:- for driving the boat in hybrid mode. Such that heat on sea field is more in India so to make use of this energy to drive certain parts of boat. Batteries will be charged using solar and they are used at night to run headlights and boat etc.
5) Artificial Intelligence: - To take self-decision by boat, it should be implemented with artificial intelligence so that it will take necessary decisions by itself and won’t be depend on the controller.
6) Slam Technology:- Simultaneous localization and mapping in which a boat will make or design the map of its surrounding area and orient itself according to the map in real-time.

Project Highlights : From historic period, for any country, nation’s security has prime priority. Looking towards the present scenario of India such that it has continuous threat from Pakistan and China mostly such that many suspicious activities had origin from these two countries only. In the attack of 26/11 such that 167 lives were destroyed and we couldn’t have the minute information about this attack.We have the capacity and research wing and yes, we can develop the defense technologies and increase the security of Indian sea so that such incidences should not be happened in future again. And this project of Unmanned Patrolling Boat will proved to be the first step towards increasing the security of coastal and sea lanes with advanced technology. Then only India will become Super Power country in great means. This is the reason, I think that this project deserve to win.
