How many times have you faced the problem of inserting wrong side of your earphone and then again looking for the 'L' & 'R' to make it right? Sooner or later this issue is going to be solved. For your stress free (or you can say, hassle free) music listening, scientists at the #-Link-Snipped-# in Japan have developed Universal Earphones with proximity sensors that can sense which ear it is being placed and accordingly switches the audio channels to match the ear.

We know proximity sensors are used in phones these days which informs the phone to turn off the display when it is close to ear and we are using it. In similar way, these prototype earphones have got a proximity sensor on one side which emits electromagnetic field to detect which ear it is plugged in. For example, if you plug in the earphone, it will sense the ear in which it is plugged in. If it is pointing at your right ear, it will start transmitting the left channel and vice-versa.

Interestingly, the earphone can also sense if it is being shared between two people and accordingly will start feeding in mono signals on both sides. And this will definitely be one pleasant music listening experience for both listeners. Some more development is also around the corner to add more functionalities to the earphone. Meanwhile you can enjoy the concept in the video below.
