Uhoh, No Ice Cream Sandwich For Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab

Since the release of Ice Cream Sandwich, Android's latest Operating System, there has been a constant speculation around as to which devices will get the update. Samsung has finally come out with a confirmation and it's not going to go down well for some. Apparently, Ice Cream Sandwich is NOT arriving on Samsung’s first Galaxy device, the Galaxy S smartphone, or on its 7-inch Galaxy Tab tablet. The reason cited by Samsung is that they lack the RAM and ROM requirements to run both ICS and Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface.

Samsung's custom User Interface, Touchwiz, is benchmarked to be juicing almost half of the available RAM at startup. This makes the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab unable to  realize the standards. Samsung, otherwise, has confirmed an Android ICS update for other devices, of which Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S are currently the only ones running ICS. The Galaxy S II smartphone and the three other Galaxy Tab sizes are expected to be getting the upgrade soon.

It is to be noted here that the problem does not lie with Galaxy S's 1-GHz Cortex A8 processor or the accompanying RAM, which are perfectly capable to run the Ice Cream Sandwich. For that matter, even LG's 600 MHz Optimus line will get Android's ICS in future. It is Samsung's UI that hinders Galaxy S from securing the ICS update. When we compare the Nexus S and Galaxy S, they essentially run the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor, but because Nexus S is an Android flagship device, based on Google's hardware, it doesn’t run Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.

Regarding other devices which are in line for an ICS update, Motorola and HTC have recently announced ICS update to be out for tablets and smartphones in another three to six months.
