Ubuntu For Tablets Coming Soon, Says Canonical

In our #-Link-Snipped-# about Ubuntu we had reported that Canonical was planning to achieve a true convergence between where the same Ubuntu code will help to deliver mobile, tablet, desktop or TV experiences. Well they surely have taken a step further to achieve their goal with the announcement of Ubuntu For Tablets. This tablet ready OS omits hardware buttons and uses edge gestures for navigation, a feature which we have already seen on its smartphone counterpart. The tablet OS is based on regular Ubuntu code that had been optimised for ARM processors.

Taking inspiration from Windows 8, Ubuntu for tablets can run multiple apps on a single screen side by side. Termed as ‘side stage’ it can place a phone and a tablet app on the same screen at the same time for additional productivity. Since it is Ubuntu it has support for multiple users and also a guest user account. Ubuntu HUD in association with voice control has been aimed at making complex application workflows simple on touch devices. Ubuntu also promises that the tablet interface will be cleaner and clutter free where focus in on content and not on controls. Canonical is now looking for OEM partners which will help to develop hardware for this tablet OS. For interested developers Canonical will be releasing the Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview for Google’s Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets. For more insight on this OS we will have to wait for the formal unveiling at the Mobile World Congress 2013.
