Uber

Let’s start with the UberAccess. The UberAccess is meant for people who are bound to their wheelchair. For this service Uber has accumulated as many as 50 vehicles which have been retrofitted with modifications to accommodate wheelchair users. They have a hydraulic wheelchair ramp which can lift the passenger into the vehicle. The heightened room is there for reasons for obvious reasons. Normally wheelchair accessible cars have side seating or the wheelchair has to face the opposite direction but with UberAccess the wheelchair user faces forward just like any other standard car seating.

Next on the list we have the UberAssist. The UberAssist is meant for people who require additional assistance to move around and may not be bound to their wheelchairs. For example the elderly or people with disabilities can use this service. The UberAssist service put into action in Bengaluru has 500 cabs and specially trained high rated Uber drivers. These Uber drivers have undergone a training session and have been certified by the Diversity and Equal Opportunity Centre at Mphasis. These drivers will provide door to door service and help the riders enter and exit the vehicle. If the rider uses foldable wheelchair then it will be folded and put into the boot of the sedan by the driver.

So how can one hail UberAccess and UberAssist? They can be hailed though the Uber app, you can use your existing account to hail cabs. Just like you would do on regular rides you have to enter your destination and scroll along the menu and tap on the ‘More’ option to select either UberAccess or UberAssist. While UberAssist fares are priced at Rs.19.50 per km we currently do not know about the UberAccess pricing. The UberAssist service is currently live and the UberAccess service will be launched soon.
