Tsukuba University's 3D Virtual Building Block System Doesn't Need Sensors

Tsukuba University's researchers have come up with a new 3D virtual building block system that doesn't need sensors or markers to operate. User's hand gestures are recognized by the system using a camera and 3D shapes are created. What we find amazing is the simple idea used for eliminating the need of sensors. The team uploaded a huge database of 3D hand shapes and 2D data on 'how hands look' to the system. Then, the system is made responsible for converting the rapid screenshots of the 2D view to 3D blocks.

Simplifying the process even further, the system has made it possible to render it unnecessary to pre-determine the camera position. The camera has to be positioned in a way that just makes sure that the user's hand is in its view. The applications that this system will bring forth are immense and awe-inspiring. 3D TV may soon become a commoner of households and with such a system in place we may have 3D virtual objects floating in midair in our living rooms and users could enlarge them with just hand gestures. The researchers have plans to bring 3D e-books using such gestures in the market within another year. We look forward to it, do you?
