    Su-30MKI
MKI stands for "Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy Indiski" meaning "Modernized Commercial India". Jointly-developed with India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the Indian Air Force. Includes Thrust Vectoring Control (TVC) and canards. Equipped with a multi-national avionics complex sourced from Israel, India, Russia and France.

    Su-30MKM

Based on the MKI, a highly specialised version for Royal Malaysian Air Force with the same platform but a French, South African and Russian combination of avionics. It will feature head-up displays (HUD), navigational forward-looking IR system (NAVFLIR) and Damocles Laser Designation pod (LDP) from Thales Group of France, MAW-300 missile approach warning sensor (MAWS), RWS-50 RWR and laser warning sensor (LWS) from SAAB AVITRONICS (South Africa), as well as the Russian NIIP N011M BARS PESA radar, electronic warfare (EW) system, optical-location system (OLS) and a glass cockpit. Others include Goodrich lights and communications suite from Rohde & Schwarz of Germany.

Yep, I've looked through it before. The MKM is based on your version.. we changed some avionic suites for political reasons (i.e, replaced the Israel made stuff ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). We also don't have any homegrown avionic tech like India does, so we still need to rely on overseas partners to supply them.

There isnt a detailed list, but here are some of the features from the Su 30 Wikipedia page:

But remember, Israeli defense systems is one of the best available. Russian and Israeli technology in defense surpasses all other countries. And Israeli Intelligence is the best(That is another thing).
Whatever the reason, replacing them with South African systems....it is not done.

Well, we don't like Israel (as a political and military aggressor), and have no diplomatic relations with them.

SAAB is still a great Swedish aerospace company ๐Ÿ˜€ The avionics division is based in both Sweden and South Africa.

Re: CE Delhi Meet [ March 28, 2009] - You are invited!

Sukhoi is a Russian Company. They have manufactured the planes and named it MKI, which translated into English means Modernized Commercial Fighter for India.
The MKM version for Malaysia means Modernized Commercial for Malaysia
    Similarly MKA for Algeria etc.
These planes are modified to specific need versions of the Russian Su-30MK (Modernized Commercial)
The country name is written in the end to distinguish them.

but then these services are not provided by other makers like lockheed-martin,MIG corp and so on
  • raj87verma88
    raj87verma88
    No they don't.
Sukhoi 30-MKI was the first time in War plane history that an aircraft was built in Russia for a foreign customer specification.
Earlier India only imported Russian planes and Mig was the option. When Air Superiority crafts were needed, Indians were undecided between Sukhoi and Mirage 2000-5.
Mirage was costlier and also the "extras" provided by Sukhoi shifted the balance in their favour.

ok...how about Jaguar series of fighters by UK,which is their latest fighter from their stable!!!
  • raj87verma88
    raj87verma88
Produced to meet a joint Anglo-French requirement in 1965 for a dual-role advanced/operational trainer and tactical support aircraft, the Jaguar has been transformed into a potent fighter-bomber. A variety of weapons including cluster, free fall, retard and laser guided bombs, as well as rockets can be carried on the four wing and one fuselage stations. Two 30mm cannon are mounted internally. To mark targets for laser-guided weapons, the aircraft carries the thermal imaging and laser designation (TIALD) pod. For self-defence, overwing Sidewinder infra-red missiles are carried and the aircraft is fitted with a comprehensive suite of electronic countermeasures. Perhaps the Jaguar's most impressive feature is its navigation and attack system. With mission data fed into the computer, all the necessary information for a pinpoint attack is relayed to the head-up display. From the display, the pilot knows exactly where the target is located and precisely when to release his weapons for maximum effect.
Two Turbomeca/Rolls-Royce Adour 104 turbofans of 7,305lb st.

    • Span: 28ft 6 in (8.69m)
    • Length: 55ft 2.5in (16.83m)
    • Max Speed: 990mph (1,593km/h) at 36,000ft (11,000m).
    • Accommodation: Single seater

Ammunition includes Two 30mm Aden guns and up to 10,000lb (4,500kg) stores including Martel, rockets and laser-guided bombs.
Long sleek fuselage with a large swept tail fin and rudder. Relatively short-span swept wings are shoulder-mounted on the fuselage. The internal jet engines have intakes either side of the fuselage behind the cockpit, with their top surfaces forming an extension of the wing. The rear jetpipes are located forward and below the tailplane which has marked anhedral. The raised bubble canopy is set above the sharply-pointed nose. The twin mainwheels of the undercarriage retract into the fuselage.

yeah, but fighters are always a risk, however how about bunker busters can they be fiited in any fighters like Sukhois or mirage.
  • raj87verma88
    raj87verma88
You will need to modify them a bit if they are not designed to carry a certain arsenal. Currently Indian Sukhois are being modified to carry the BrahMos missile.

    Raptors are awesome but:
    1) They are very expensive.
    2) US wont export any F-22s anyway (for now).

Looks like we can only enjoy them in games. Have any of you tried F22 Lighting 3? How cool was it to go into limited "stealth mode", drop some GBU-32s, then afterburn the heck away while dodging the SAMs? Though admittedly, dogfighting kinda sucked for the F22.

I like Russian combat jets better for their performance per cost. Though it was quite a unfortunate they wont manufacture the Su 47 ๐Ÿ˜‰

The real reason why we haven't discussed any US aircraft is because they are not that good. Seriously, the US planes are overrated. Except their navy, everything else is overrated.

On a related note, The USAF Thunderbirds demo group had tour in Malaysia, right at the airforce base near my house. Not much acrobats, but still cool to see F-16s flying in formation and doing crazy loops. The Malaysian Sukhois also strutting their stuff, awesome maneuverability.

    Nice pictures here: #-Link-Snipped-#

Also, I just bought Tom Clancy's HAWX! Awesome game, but its more towards arcade action (Ace Combat style) rather than a full blown simulator.

I personally don't think India should import any F-16 or F/A-18s..Too much money and time will be spent in setting up repair and allied facilities for them in India. Also, technical personnel will have to be trained in maintenance..

India should go in for Sukhois, they are already operated by our air force. So even if we opt for a different version, there whould be at least some similarity between the two!!

Why go for F-16 etc which are 4th generation warplanes when 5th generation planes are available. The link below contains a list of 5th generation fighters available and in development. Only a handful of countries have access to this technology right now.

LCA is a fifth generation fighter but sadly its failed in so many tests. They have used 25 years of time to develop something that cannot even beat the sukoi. I heard of this project that russia and india are going to start so far known its a supersonic fighter multi-role and still its in conceptual phase itself might take more 10-12 years to hear some news over its development and testing

I believe you are refering to the PAK-FA.. the PAK FA is the fifth generation fighter jointly being developed by India and Russia, the trials of the Russian version are ongoing at the moment.

It does not look too different from the F22, but Indian Software has added so much intelligence to the flight, that the pilots say it is very difficult to crash it !!! ๐Ÿ˜€ that is just awesome ...

Moreover the Indian version will be called the MCA or medium Combat Aircraft, this would be India's Second front line fighter along with Tejas or the LCA.

There are amazing videos on Youtube of the PAK - FA in action already since it jsut did the trials a few weeks back .. you guys should check it out ...

pakfa will not be made for India. it will be used as a platform for indian FGFA(fifth generation fighter aircraft) project. the major difference between pak fa and fgfa will be addition of 2nd pilot in fgfa.
pak fa will use standard Russion avionics suit while Indian fgfa may have indigenously developed Integrated Digital "mayavi" suit(developed with the help of Israel) which will be made compatible with IAF IL76 awacs(the data transfer rate and format has to be matched). however the software made for both planes will be similar based on ADA language.
India has equal share in project as far as the funding is concerned and will provide 25% technical efforts in project(mainly software as India is superior than Russia in dat domain). the entire design, stealth, engine and hardware will be provided by Russia.
another difference will be, the fgfa may have 3rd party systems such as BVRMs and Radars.
with fgfa development India will be the 3rd country which will operate 5th gen. aircraft after U.S. and Russia
