The £43m Supercomputer 'ARCHER' Unveiled At University of Edinburgh
University of Edinburgh must feel proud to announce that a new supercomputer called Academic Research Computing High End Resource (ARCHER) system is going to be launched in their campus. The system is capable of performing a million billion calculations every second and just like other supercomputers, it aims at carrying out complex computations. ARCHER operate 3.5 times faster than the system that it has replaced and has bagged the title of being the most powerful supercomputer in the UK. The supercomputer has support for various Big Data applications and can be used in areas like simulation of Earth's climate or calculation of the airflow around an aircraft and designing new materials.
ARCHER is owned by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and was supplied by US computing experts Cray. The Massively Parallel Processor uses Crayâs XC30 hardware. Using the Intelâs Xeon E5-2600v2 processor series, the supercomputer delivers ground-breaking performance and maximizes energy efficiency as well as scalability. UK Research Data Facility and the Research Councils have come together to build this unique facility unique in the UK.
All this means that world-leading research and business impact is something to look forward to from UK - thanks to the £43m Supercomputer 'ARCHER'. Do take a look at a video from University of Edinburgh where Dr. Alan Simpson talks about ARCHER. Here you go -
