THE DISABLED FRIENDLY CAR

Project Abstract / Summary : Project overview:
“The Disabled Friendly Car” or “Project DC-1” is an attempt to develop a car for physically challenged drivers. The projects aim to design and develop a car which allows the drivers with partial or complete disability to use their legs. By taking away the controls from the feet and smartly placing them in the hands, a car can be designed for physically challenged people.

Making it all possible:
To make it simple to explain, we have divided the various changes needed for this project according to the sub systems of the car:
1. Transmission: A fully automatic transmission or an AMT(Automated Manual Transmission) can be used to operate the vehicle.
2. The steering wheel: The diameter of the steering wheel shall be increased (upto 1”) as compared to the standard wheel in commercial cars. The accelerator and the brake pedals will be mounted on the steering wheel, a larger wheel gives more space to accommodate the components and also gives more room for driver to easily operate the vehicle. Steering monted controls like turn indicators and headlight controls shall be shifted on to the levers.
3. The steering mounted levers: “D” shaped lever shall be attached to the back of steering wheels to act as the accelerator and the brake levers. The accelerator and brake lever is attached to a torque amplifier which increases the torque transmitted to the mechanism, thus reducing the driver’s effort.
4. Seats and doors: The doors are made to open outward and upward. This increases the room for driver to get inside the car from wheelchair. Seats of the car is actuated with the motion of the door via a stepper motor. The seat is pulled out as the door opens. The base of the seat is can rotate up to 90 degrees, allowing an easy mounting for driver. Seat is pulled in with close of the door and driver can assume his normal driving position.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : the project allows to explore a new design and concept of an automobile.this will also eliminate the local modifications of made in the vehicles which lack precision and safety standard. due to increased space because of the absence of the pedals allows more room to increase the comfort of the drivers. the design allows driver to be completely independent while operating the vehicle which includes getting in and out of the it.
