A survey has placed Koreans as the second most hardworking people in the world and another study has found out that daily grocery shopping is a dreaded task for them. And a grocery giant in Korea, Tesco (Home Plus) analyzed this situation and has come up with a solution that is not only good for the people but also pushed Tesco to the No.1 position in the market sales.
The idea is a very simple one: make use of the office goersâ waiting time in the subway platform to make sales but to do so without increasing the number of stores. This concept is called virtual grocery. During their waiting time people can browse through the racks of products just like in a departmental store, except that they are in a subway platform and they are not seeing the actual products but a virtual representation of it with QR codes emblazoned on it.

The walls of the subway is filled with the representations and when waiting for the trains people can scan the unique code of the product they would like to purchase and place an order using Home Plus Smartphone app and the product goes directly to the virtual shopping cart and the order is delivered directly to your residence when you want it. Thus both the consumer and the retailer are benefited from this idea. Consumer makes an efficient use of the time wasted in the subway by finishing his grocery shopping and getting enough rest in the evening and Tesco has emerged No.1 with a 130% increase in online sales.
