I had no idea they existed but Indian hackers seem to be creating some nuisance for Symantec. The hacker group operating under the title 'The Lords of Dharmaraja' claims to have the source code of Symantec’s flagship product, Norton Antivirus software. Symantec has confirmed the news in an e-mail posted Friday but it added that the code was stolen from a third party and is old with no breach to its network.

The group's threat of a leakage was posted on Pastebin, but is not available anymore. Though a Google cached version claims that the source code was obtained during a hack of India's military and intelligence servers. #-Link-Snipped-# that it is probable that the source code was indeed retrieved from the Indian military, as many governments ask for source code from vendors to make sure that the software isn’t really spyware.

Even if the 'Lords' have the source code, Impervia says that it is not a serious issue for Symantec or its customer base. There isn't much that can be learnt or extracted from the source code that is new as most of the antivirus products are based on attack signatures. Yes, if the source code is recent and vulnerabilities are detected by hackers, then it could be possible to exploit the anti-virus program. But going from Symantec's take on the issue, they seem to be well ahead of the issue.

Symantec is currently developing a remediation process to provide long-term protection for its customers' crucial data. <em>"Given the early stages of the investigation, we have no further details to disclose at this time but will provide updates as we confirm additional facts"</em>, Symantec said.

Maybe a better name would do the trick, Dharmaraja Lords. Just saying.
