Supercomputer CRAY XK6 Analyses Ice Cream. Tells Why Vanilla Is Better Than Mango.

It looks like the scientists and engineers at the University of Edinburgh have put the super computing power of CRAY XK6 to some good use over predicting weather and finding whether life exists on other planets. The researchers used CRAY XK6 to analyse the complex process that happens when the different ingredients of ice-cream mix with each other. The simulation of ice-cream is just a small part of a bigger experiment of analysing the soft matter including sauces, automobile lubricants and various types of paints. The powerful XK6 is capable of creating simulations of different mixtures, suspensions and formation of liquid crystals. The analysis can help in creating better products.

CRAY XK6 is located at Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC). The XK6 architecture is  same as the XE6 'Blade' architecture. Each blade comprises of four computing nodes. XK6's each node boasts of 16-core AMD Opteron 6200 processor along with 16 or 32 GB of DDR3 RAM and an Nvidia Tesla X2090 GPGPU with 6 GB of GDDR5 RAM. The interconnect is offered by PCI Express 2.0.
